3 joyful days with JUS by Julie – a review

JUS: French for juice, or gravy, but in this case, fruit + veggie gravy.

le JUS came into my life after getting whacked with the cold of the century. Ok, a little dramatic but I was down and out for three days. The fine folks from JUS by Julie offered to send me a 3-day cleanse. This was exactly what my body was screaming for, Julie answered the call.

Call me transparent Jacq; while they provided me the JUS, I was not obligated to write a review, or a positive one.

This is not a JUICE cleanse. The JUS is blended, which means the pulp and fiber is still in the bottle. I feel good about this and feel it’s a much more natural way to cleanse.

The starting lineup

Morning Glory – romaine, celery, spinach, apple, kale, banana, strawberry
Spicy Lemonade – lemon, maple syrup, cayenne
Sweet Spin – spinach, kale, pineapple, banana, mango
Acai Blend – acai berries, strawberries, banana
Not so chunky – bananas and PB
Spicy Pome-nade – pomegranate. lemon, maple syrup, cayenne pepper
Chia Berry – strawberries, chia seeds, lemon, pomegranate
Island Coconut – coconut meat, date, cinnamon

Day 1
I heard the FedEx truck pull up to my condo around 10:00 am…YES! I ran downstairs to collect the goods. I started my day with green tea, then some homemade green juice made from cucs, romaine, chard, apple and lemon. The JUS arrived ice cold in a cooler bag – which is going to be SO freaking awesome for toting food to the beach.

I started off with the morning glory, and it took a good hour to sip it, it went down MUCH more slowly than juice. Next up was spicy lemonade. I love they use maple syrup instead of super processed agave like many other juices. YUM!

Sweet spin came in the early afternoon which was nice, I sometimes find pineapple tastes like vomit so I was worried – but this one was a winner!

The acai (you say it Ah-Sigh-EE – don’t worry, I butchered it for years) was a nice refreshing late afternoon snack.

I was feeling great so I went to hot yoga in the evening.

Not so chunky monkey was my reward for not farting in yoga class today. Seriously, how can you not love banana + PB?

Since my order arrived at 10 this morning I had a later start than I normally would. I was “due” to have the last green smoothie of the day around 8:00pm, but I wasn’t hungry, so I had some tea instead. I’ll save it for a hungrier day or on “breaking the cleanse” day.

Day 2
I woke up hungry, but that’s normal for me. I start my day with some green tea with a squeeze of lemon, today was no different and drank my first smoothie of the day, Morning Glory. Next up was the Spicy Pome-nade, so refreshing!

So far I’m feeling great, steady energy, AWESOME digestion. I’d love to say I slept better but my 5 year old had other plans for me between 3-4am :) Thankfully I was able to get back to sleep!

Mid-afternoon + pre-yoga (yes TWO days in a row!) treat was the Chia Berry. There’s chunks of strawberry in here and it tastes like a strawberry daquiri. I’m totally pretending it is one on this particularly cold and gray Chicago day.

Island Coconut is what’s for dinner! This was another one I could have drank with a fancy little umbrella – DELISH!

Day 3
The last day! I was feeling great, my digestion was humming along like a well-fibered machine. It was a busy week at work and I had the mental capacity to plow through some complicated stuff at 5 hour clips. Hellooo efficiency!

Come dinner time, after having the Not So Chunky, hubby wanted to go out for dinner. While I wasn’t technically supposed to eat solid food until tomorrow, I was ready to eat. I took it easy and had a Greek salad with no cheese and lemon juice for dressing along with some grilled veggies. It totally hit the spot and I still felt good.

I don’t feel bad at all about breaking the cleanse a little early, I did what made sense for my life :)

that’s a wrap! After my first juice cleanse my bod had much trouble getting back  to normal and waking up my digestion took a good 3 days after the cleanse. This time though, I had no problems.

Since I had two leftover Sweet Greens smoothies; one from day 1 and the other from day 3, I had these two before lunch on the first day off the cleanse. I think my bod appreciated a smoothie cleanse and did quite well on it! The cleanse part is easy, you just drink the smoothies, water and herbal tea and you’re set.

The post-cleanse part requires a little more attention.

post-game The cleanse is the easy part, just drink your juice, water and some tea and you’re set. It’s the post game that requires a little more attention. It’s still easy though, so no worries. I eased my way out my eating mostly raw fruits and veggies. I don’t eat wheat so that wasn’t an issue, but I did take a few days to reintroduce nuts, seeds and grains like rice and gluten-free pasta. Easy peasy. I also had some wine and some dark chocolate right after my cleanse. It made me + my bod smile :)

What I loved about JUS:

  1. variety – having different flavors all day kept it interesting
  2. the fiber – my bod likes fiber, the end
  3. the JUS! Every bottle was tasty
  4. unfussy – not having to think at all about food for 3 days let me focus on other things

Was I hungry?
A common question I get when cleansing, and the answer is yes, I was hungry, but don’t you get hungry before you eat? Shouldn’t you eat when you’re hungry? When I was hungry, I had another JUS, which varied, but was between 1.5-3 hours. No fuss.

Why is there fruit in the smoothies? I read a few review of the JUS cleanse that complained about the sugar in the smoothies. There is no processed sugar in the smoothies, just fruit, the whole fruit, and nothing but the fruit + veggies + water. When did people become so afraid of eating fruit? It’s a goddamn plant. I’m more of a veggie fan than fruit fan and I did just fine on this cleanse.
